Three new partners for CHINA 8
The Kunstmuseum Mülheim an der Ruhr, the Finnish airline Finnair and Düsseldorf Airport are taking part in the large-scale exhibition project being staged across 8 cities along the Rhine and Ruhr
The participation of the Kunstmuseum Mülheim an der Ruhr
now brings to nine the number of museums from 8 cities
along the Rhine and Ruhr simultaneously presenting CHINA 8
– the most comprehensive survey of contemporary Chinese
art in Germany to date. Alongside established artists, the
positions of younger and newly emerging artists are also
represented. From May 15 to September 13, 2015 works from
the genres of painting, ink painting, sculpture,
calligraphy, installation and video will be unveiled. Our
exclusive airline partner Finnair flies between Asia,
Europe and North America with an emphasis on fast
connections via Helsinki connecting 15 cities in Asia with
more than 60 destinations in Europe. As our advertising
partner for the exhibition, Düsseldorf Airport will
provide the opportunity for air travellers in the terminal
to gain a first impression of the exhibition. CHINA 8 is
being organised by the Stiftung für Kunst und Kultur e.V.
Bonn.
As a participant in this landmark exhibition, the Kunstmuseum Mülheim an der Ruhr will be showcasing the latest artistic trends from China and installations. Commenting on the involvement of her museum in CHINA8, Dr. Beate Reese, Direktorin des Mülheimer Kunstmuseums stated: “We are delighted to be part of this impressive exhibition. Local residents and visitors to the Ruhr metropolis now have the unique opportunity of viewing art from China in all its manifold facets.”
“We have long history of connecting China and Europe. We offer a modern silk road to passengers and cargo from Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Hong Kong and Xi´an to Düsseldorf and other parts of Germany”, says Jarkko Konttinen, VP Marketing and Product, Finnair. “We´re excited to be part of this exhibition that connects our key markets Germany and China.”
Overall curatorial responsibility has been jointly entrusted to Walter Smerling (Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Director of the MKM Museum Küppersmühle), Tobia Bezzola (Director of the Museum Folkwang) and Ferdinand Ullrich (Director of the Kunsthalle Recklinghausen). In close consultation with the directors of the participating museums, the Board of Trustees has elaborated the overall concept of the exhibition. In determining the show’s artistic positions, each of the individual exhibition venues has been assigned the following genres:
The Duisburg Lehmbruck Museum is presenting sculptures, the Kunstmuseum Gelsenkirchen ink paintings and calligraphy, whilst the Kunsthalle Recklinghausen will focus on more recent and socially critical painting, and the MKM Museum Küppersmühle on established painting. Film and video are on show in the Skulpturenmuseum Glaskasten Marl, and installation art and applied art in the Hagen Osthaus Museum. The Kunstmuseum in Mülheim an der Ruhr will highlight the latest trends in art and the Essen Museum Folkwang is hosting photography. Serving as the entrée to the exhibition, as it were, is the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf, which will unveil the works of several of the participating artists from across various genres.
“Chinese artists are in the process of formulating their own artistic language,” explains Chairman of the Board of Trustees Professor Walter Smerling. “And this is a development we are keen to highlight in the nine museums and eight cities staging the CHINA 8 exhibition. The success of the European City of Culture “RUHR2010″ clearly demonstrates what the cultural metropolis of the Ruhr is capable of achieving through close collaboration. It is upon this that we now wish to build in our exhibition project, and we are delighted to be able to count on the close cooperation of the state capital of Düsseldorf and the generous support of Finnair and Düsseldorf Airport.
The number “eight” featured in the title not only stands for the 8 participating cities, but is also a significant Chinese lucky number. The exhibition is sponsored by the Brost-Stiftung and Evonik Industries AG. Exclusive partners of the exhibition are Finnair Plc and Düsseldorf Airport.
